2024 Composer Symposium: July 2-9
Featured Composers: Catalina Rueda & Levi Raleigh Brown
This project is supported in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Catalina Rueda - Composer and Performer. She harbors a love for Renaissance music, Latin American folklore and dances, as well as folk music from around the world. In her compositions, these worlds meld into a perceptual language. She actively explores hybrid forms in composition, intertwining composed and improvised music. This exploration includes the development of improvisational concepts and their notation. Passionately working with other art forms, such as poetry, literature, theater, and dance, she seeks to find common spaces where the interaction between these artistic realms becomes the foundation of the
creative process. She has collaborated with a variety of artists, including KNM Berlin, Asian Art Ensemble, Mirror Strings, the Kölner Vokalsolisten, Trobar e Cantar, Theater Orchestra Aachen, Duisburg Philharmonic, Stuttgart State Opera, Phoenix Ensemble Munich, Reverberation Percussion, Rungholt Ensemble Hamburg, NMC Ensemble, Duo.Lab 51, and Ensemble I Transiti. Her interdisciplinary work involves collaborations with Mien Bogaert, Pia-Rabea Vornholt, Annett Stenzel, Josef Bairlein, Lisa Pottstock, and Cia Rinne. Her music has been showcased at several festivals, such as KNM Contemporaries, Blurred Edges, New Music in Husum, and the Eight Bridges Festival in Cologne. |
Levi Raleigh Brown (b. 1996) is a composer, percussionist, pianist, and banjoist currently based in Iowa City, IA. His music aims to examine the shared aspects of the daily human experience, particularly in the ongoing struggle between our idea of control and the universal pattern of change and uncertainty. Is there a balance to be found in our search for meaning and order amidst an unpredictable, even chaotic experience of the world? How does the daily, often unconscious search for this balance bring us closer together? Often crossing genres and disciplines, he explores these ideas musically with a sense of spontaneity, drawing from a
variety of musical styles, and creating a juxtaposition between musical structure and wild antics which disrupt a fully rational or formal understanding. Levi enjoys writing for a variety of ensembles, and has had pieces performed by Arditti Quartet, Wave Dash, Maxine Thevenot, New Mexico Contemporary Ensemble, New Music New Mexico, Rosie Cerquone, Siren Duo, and the University of Montana Percussion Ensemble, among others, and has also written and arranged for jazz ensembles. Frequently performing as a percussionist, he has played with numerous chamber ensembles including New Music New Mexico, Moving Lines Ensemble, and Eudae Duo, which he founded with saxophonist Charlotte Leung. He has also enjoyed sharing the stage with visual artists and poets in collaborative performance. Originally from Montana, Levi earned his Bachelor of Music from The University of Montana and his Master of Music in composition from the University of New Mexico. |
